Vehicle Code Section 20002(a):
Hit & Run. Leaving the scene of an accident without exchanging information
with the other driver or leaving identifying information if no one else is at the
scene.
This type of offense can carry up to 6 months in county jail, depending on your
previous driving history, criminal record or the seriousness of your conduct. An

Vehicle Code Section 20001(a):
Hit & Run with Injury: Similar to hit and run, with the additional requirement that
someone is injured as a result of the accident. Can be charged as either a
felony or a misdemeanor.
If the injury is not serious, this offense will be charged as a misdemeanor with
a maximum penalty of 1 year in the county jail. If the accident results in serious,
permanent injury or death, the prosecuting agency can file the case as either a
misdemeanor or a felony. If filed as a felony, the defendant is facing up to 3
years in state prison.
